Old Hickory and Donelson, Tennessee, are a part of Davidson County, which is located in the north central part of the state. Bordered by the Cumberland River to the west and Old Hickory Lake to the east, the region is an outdoorsman’s paradise that offers a vast array of additional recreational and cultural amenities to suit the interests of a diverse population. Approximately 570,000 people reside in the county. Old Hickory is home to nearly 10,000 while Donelson currently has almost 34,000 residents.
The region is primarily consumed by the Nashville Metro Area and is the hub for employment, education and entertainment. The University of Tennessee’s main campus is situated in the heart of Nashville and its presence continues to facilitate a vibrant fine arts community in the form of theatres, performance halls and other entertainment venues. The most notable is the Grand Ole Opry.
Fortunately, commuting in and out of Old Hickory and Donelson is very easy, making accessibility into Nashville, the state’s capital, simple for residents. With its many attractions, cultural amenities and recreational and employment opportunities, Nashville’s big city excitement, perfectly blends with Old Hickory’s small town feel. Nashville’s major professional sports teams include the Titans, the Sounds and the Predators. There is also a major speedway that is part of Dover Motorsports, Incorporated, which hosts over 150 annual racing events with nearly every major sanctioning body represented including NASCAR. Furthermore, the University of Tennessee’s sporting events are ecliptic as its student athletes participate in one of the country’s toughest conferences. The Southeast Conference includes schools such as Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana State, Florida and Auburn. Cultural amenities in Nashville include the Grand Ole Opry, Belle Meade Plantation, The Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nashville Zoo and Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art.
Major hospitals that serve the area include Skyline Medical Center, Summit Medical Center and the Tennessee Christian Medical Center. The primary high school is McGavock High, which is supported by feeder schools such as Andrew Jackson Elementary, DuPont Elementary, Ruby Major Elementary and Dupont-Hadley Middle School. A selection of parochial and private schools is also located throughout the region, as are trade schools and working adult universities such as the University of Phoenix.
By no means are Old Hickory and Doneleson rural communities. Their urban setting is a combination of residential, retail and commercial developments that together, make this side of Nashville an attractive place to live for working adults and retirees alike. Homes here are located in peaceful neighborhoods with simple access to regional shopping centers, dining and nightlife.
